Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart
Drak Theatre / concept, dramaturgy / 2015 (Theatre News Prize for Original Concept)
“Do not believe that which you are given to believe: Examine everything and look for the proof!”
Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart by John Amos Comenius is a key work of Czech humanist philosophy. Even after hundreds of years it is surprisingly relevant. A traveller, who sets out into the world to find his place in it, almost seems to be describing our own day-to-day experience.
Based on Comenius’ parable, the Drak Theatre building turns into the Labyrinth. In this imaginary world, the viewers can walk and act freely just as the character of the traveller. They will be able to choose their own unique path through the Labyrinth through its various paths, traps, or hidden streets. The play aims to relate Comenius’ thoughts with contemporary society and offer the young visitors a clear view into the world of adults. It will help them to look for and understand the signs of reality and avoid falsity and illusions.
Unique interactive theatre performance is a fusion of a stage play, art exhibition and social game. It is primarily aimed at teenagers who are starting their path towards finding their place within the society, and are facing important decisions that can form their future lives.
